Björk - All Is Full Of Love (Singles/EU Version) [1999]

Genre: Electronica, Tribal House, Alternative, Ambient

MySpace: bjork

My opinion & thought: I think "All Is Full Of Love" is the best song ever written & performed by Björk. With the genius director Chris Cunningham directing the music video, make this song a perfect match of music & visuals.

Stands out track(s): All Is Full Of Love (Radio Strings Mix)

Song:

"All Is Full of Love" is a song by Björk, released as the fifth and final single from her album Homogenic. The version of the song used in the video is actually the originally intended mix, while the version on Homogenic was a remix by Howie B.

The music for "All Is Full of Love" features sounds inspired by machines, and is accompanied by orchestral instruments and harps. The lyrics offer the simple hope that indeed, love is all around you, even if you don't see it.

It was first released as a dance single by Funkstörung with their remixes in late 1998, but later received a full single and video release in the 1999 summer.

The single was an alternative rock hit as well as a dance hit in America. It peaked at #8 on the dance charts. Meanwhile, in the UK, the single peaked at #23. It is the first track on Björk's Greatest Hits album.

This single was one of the first to ever be issued on the new DVD single format, to maximise exposure of the video.

The indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie released a cover version of the song on The Stability E.P.

Music video:

The music video was directed by Chris Cunningham and featured two intimate robots.

The video won multiple awards, including an MTV music video award for Breakthrough Video and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video (it lost toKorn's "Freak on a Leash"). It is on permanent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The video also placed in "MTV 2's 100 best video ever" coming in at number 1. The song itself was also critically acclaimed, winning numerous awards.

The video starts with a robotic Björk lying on a white platform in the centre of a sterile room being assembled or repaired by mechanical arms in what appears to be a clinic for robots. Even before finishing the assembly, the first Björk robot meets another Björk robot, who joins in the song with her. They start to kiss passionately as machines work on assembling electronics in their backs.

According to the website of Glassworks, the company which did the special effects for Cunningham, SOFTIMAGE and Flame software were used for 3D elements and 2D compositing respectively.

Contrary to popular belief, the two robots in the film were non-working models. When the film I, Robot screened in 2004, some people found the robot design in that movie was inspired by the video directed by Cunningham — he has not commented.
