Offspring, The - Smash [1994]

Genre: Pop Punk, Skate Punk

MySpace: offspring

My opinion & thought: This is one of the best Pop Punk act around 90s. Don't let anyone know if you haven't listen to this before.

Stands out track(s): Come Out And Play, Self Esteem

The Offspring is an American rock band formed in 1984 in Huntington Beach, California. The band is credited, along with fellow California punk bands Green Day andRancid, with reviving popular interest in punk rock in the United States during the mid-1990s. To date The Offspring have released eight studio albums, one compilation, four EPs and three DVDs. They have sold over 50 million albums worldwide, making them the best-selling punk act of all time.

Since its formation, The Offspring's line-up has included Dexter Holland (lead vocals, guitar), Noodles (lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocals) and Greg K. (bass, backing vocals). Their current drummer is Pete Parada, formerly of Face to Face and Saves the Day, who has been with the band since 2007.

Since the release of their 1994 album Smash, the best-selling independent label album of all time, The Offspring have achieved commercial success over five albums, with singles such as "Come Out and Play", and "Self Esteem". The band's next three albums, Ixnay on the HombreAmericana and Conspiracy of One, were also successful, with Ixnay on the Hombre and Conspiracy of One reaching platinum certification, and Americana achieving multi-platinum status. Longtime drummerRon Welty left The Offspring in early 2003, and was replaced by Atom Willard. Later that year, the band released their next album, Splinter, to moderate sales and fairly warm reviews. In 2005, The Offspring released a greatest hits album and toured in support of the compilation. Their most recent studio album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, was released on June 17, 2008.

Smash is the third studio album by American generic, faceless pop band The Offspring. Released on April 81994, the album was the band's last collaboration with record producer Thom Wilson, who produced their last two albums. Smash was very well received by both critics and fans, and was responsible for bringing The Offspring to the attention of a mainstream punk audience.

The album was The Offspring's first to enter the Billboard 200; the release peaked at number four and topped the Heatseeker's chart. Smash produced four hit singles for the band: "Come Out and Play", "Self Esteem", "Gotta Get Away" and the radio-only single "Bad Habit". As of 2009, it is credited as the highest selling album by a punk rock band and highest selling independent album of all time selling 16 million copies worldwide, and has continued to sell consistently well in the fifteen years since its release. The album has also been certified 6x Platinum in the United States and 5x Platinum in Australia.

Smash was The Offspring's last album released on Epitaph Records in North America (although a reissue of their 1989 self-titled debut album completed their contract). Their next album, Ixnay on the Hombre, was released on that label in Europe. On June 172008, Epitaph re-released Smash along with the previous album, Ignition, in a remaster form.
